About: A Self-Interview

Dylan Tern is the pseudonym of an aspiring writer studying at the University of Waterloo. He likes role-playing games, reading, rock and roll and good wine.

Q: Why did you become a poet?

A: I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome when I was six or seven, so I automatically found myself as an “outsider.” This became clearer as I grew into my teen years. At the time I wanted to write fantasy and science fiction and I read Tolkein and Frank Herbert. At some point my Dad told me to start reading classics, or stuff about actual human beings. I didn’t really know what that meant, but at some point in my high school career I picked up a book about Cult Fiction and began to use it as a reading guide. That is probably what got me into the Beat Generation, and along with listening to Indiefeed: Performance Poetry I somehow got the idea to become a poet. So far I’ve been doing alright.
